1. Disclamer

  • This product is not fully verified about safety. It is created by amateur as a hobby, provided "as is" and without warranty of any kind.
  • Do not connect it with PC that must not breakdown.
  • It is not available with specific PC by the compatibility problem in the PS/2 interface.
  • Before using it,do the insulation processing as rolling with the friction tape.
  • It only support PS/2 scancode set 2.
  • The function to send a different scancode according to the situation of Ctrl, Alt, Shift, and NumLock is not supported.
  • Alt + PrintScreen pushing simultaneously is supported.
  • The content of this document may be changed at any time and without notice.
  • Reverse engineering is prohibited.
  • The firmware in the microprocessor cannot be backed up.

2. Supported Hardware

  • It is only the following keyboard that confirms the operation.

Apple Extended Keyboard( M0115 )
Apple Keyboard( M0116 )
Apple Extended Keyboard II Made in USA( M3501 )
Apple II GS Keyboard Made in Japan(658-4081)

  • Confirmed PS/2 port of pc is as follows.

SHARP Mebius PC-BJ100M (Linux)
OASYS V-BIBLO FMV-5100NU/W (Windows95)
NEC PC-MA10T ( Windows2000,Linux )

  • USB-PS/2 converter to confirm the operation is only the following.

[SMILE] SA-BAR2
SANWA USB-CVPS1
(note 1)

  • The following keyboard is not supported because there is a problem in operation.

Keyboard that simulates mechanical lock(=push lock) of CapsLock key such as PIONEER KEYBOARD ( MPC-KB2 ) .
NeXT ADB
keyboard(Power key unavailable)

  • The following USB-PS/2 converter is not support because there is a problem in operation.

Audio Technica ATC-USBPS2
SIGMA PS2USB1BK

3. Difference with iMate

  • This converter is converted into PS/2 while iMate is converted into USB.
  • The iMate is a major product, and it has high reliability and safety compared with this product.
  • Please use this converter after you remove a mechanical lock (push lock) mechanism of CapsLock, and to use CapsLock like a usual PS/2 keyboard.
  • With this converter right Ctrl/Alt/Shift key returns a different scancode from left key ,same as usual PS/2 keyboard ,while iMate generates the same scancode.
  • However, a right command key (apple key = Windows key) returns the same scancode as the left.
  • The Fn key like Happy Hacking Keyboard  can be used. Even with Apple standard keyboard without the function key can generate function key scancode.

4. Cabling

  • Connect the keyboard to the converter with Mini-Din4P male - male's ADB cable.
  • Connect the converter to the PS/2 port with Mini-Din6P male - male cable. In Akihabara, it was sold for 300 yen-400 yen .

5. Customizing of keyboard

  • The key assign can be changed by rewriting EEPROM of microcontroller.

  • Without special tool or software, you can rewrite EEPROM.

  • To rewrite EEPROM, you must enter "configure mode".

  • If you retrieve default status of EEPROM,Please examine the difference with the map of the initial value to return the initial state, and overwrite a different value in an initial value.

6. Map of EEPROM

  • An initial value is as follows.

0x00 1C 1B 23 2B 33 34 1A 22 21 2A 00 32 15 1D 24 2D

7. Explanation

  • The PS/2 key scancode of S key and G key is 0x1B, and 0x34. The ADB key scancode in 0x01 and 0x05. If you set value 0x34 at address 0x01,when the "S" key is pushed, "G" is input.

  • The scancode of "2" key is 0x1E.The scancode of "F2" key is 0x06.Loog at the value of address 0x9E and 0x9F.

  • If you set value of address 0xDB to 1,NumLock LED may be turned off at power on.

  • 0xDA, 0xDC, and 0xDD need not change if converter is not unstable.

  • If you set value of address 0xDE to 0x39, mechanical locked CapsLock may support.

  • The Fn key is voidable by the set of an unused PS/2 scancode in 0xDF.If you set this value  from 0x9F to 0x58, the CapsLock key becomes Fn key.

  • 0xE0-0xFF is read only.If you change the key assigh of 0-9,A-F key, It returns to the initial state according to the timing of the startup of the converter. In a word, an irreversible change cannot be done.

  • After 5-10 seconds have passed since the converter startup, use the value of 0xDC-0xDF. Moreover, it is not used in "configure mode". In a word, even if the unexpected value is set, it is possible to retrieve.

8. How to use "configure mode"

  1. Open editor. (ex. notepad.exe)

  2. Connect the converter with the power on PC. If you scare of PS/2 hot pluggin, use PS/2-USB converter.

  3. Push the key "A" and "B" within five seconds after the converter powered.

  4. On the editor , ";"  (semicolon is displayed. This is a prompt of "configure mode".

  5. Please push the "D"(Dump) key. EEPROM map is displayed.

  6. Please push the "E"(Edit) key.  ";"  (semicolon is displayed again. This state is "input mode".

  7. Please input the address and the overwrited value by the hexadecimal number. For instance, please input "D" "F" "5" "8" key when you rewrite 0xDF in 0x58. In this case, please note that ten keys cannot be used. It automatically returns to "configure mode" when the input ends.

  8. Whether the value writes and it changed can be confirmed with "D" key.

  9. Please push the "B"(Boot) key when coming off  "configure mode". The converter returns to normal operation. If possible, reboot your PC.

9. Extra

  • The ADB keyboard of an initial type (the 1980's) consumes big power,PS/2 keyboard power-on may malfunctions.
  • The microcontroller(PIC12F683)'s  No.2 pin connect to GND(0 Volt) , "configure mode" can be prohibited. However, please do not practice the person who doesn't understand the meaning.

  • The Power button of NeXT(ADB) Keyboard cannot be used as it is. The microcontroller(PIC12F683)'s  No.3 pin connect to ADB connector's No.2 pin, rewrite EEPROM value of address 0x7E , .you can use Power button. However, please do not practice the person who doesn't understand the meaning.

  • (note 1)The knack is necessary for entering in "configure mode". First, connect USB-CVPS1 , second, connect with PS2M0115, and input "A" "B" after 2 seconds. Push "D" either prompt (;) is displayed or not. If EEPROM map is displayed, you are in "configure mode". Please try it many times. I think that I put it when trying about 20 times. Surely.....
